How to Change the Default Location for Installing Applications in Windows Xp

In Windows Xp the default location where the applications are installed is located in C:/Program Files. Sometimes you can run out of space in C: drive and it become impossible to install the programs. But there is a registry tweak which can let you install the applications in different directory of your choice.

Run the Registry editor by typing regedit in the run command box and go to

Just look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. You will see that this value is shown as C:\Program Files by default. Now edit this value and add the location where you want to set the default installation directory. From now onwards XP will use this location as the new default installation directory.

Memory card corrupted? – Easy fixes and solutions

Memory card corrupted? Don’t panic just yet! Often, while transferring data if the memory card is taken out or if the power is shut off, it tends to get corrupted and unusable. We’re going to tell you how to fix corrupted memory cards, using a few common solutions that could solve your problem. But keep in mind that completely destroyed or physically damaged memory cards cannot be fixed easily, neither can data recovery be done from them other than using professional data recovery solutions which can be really expensive. For situations where the memory card is not recognized or cannot be used due to incorrect formatting, here’s what you need to do!

Memory Card Corrupted - The Problems

Problem 1 – Memory card can be read but not accessed

When you take out a memory card during data transfer, the file structure can get scrambled and ultimately, your device or PC might not be able to read any data from it. However, the actual data is still present in it. This memory card corrupted can be fixed by the doing the following:

Step 1 – Plug in the memory card via an adapter, card reader or any way you can to your computer.
Step 2 – Check if the memory card shows up in File Explorer, it most probably won’t be accessible but will have the right file system and everything. Note the drive letter path.
Step 3 – Open command prompt, preferably as Administrator and typed “chkdsk x: /r” without the quotes. Here, X is the drive letter of your memory card.
Step 4 – Let the process complete. If it asks to “convert lost chains to files”, type “y” for yes.

If only the file structure was damaged but not the files themselves, you will be able to get back all your files and use the memory card like normal again. Yep, the usually annoying CheckDisk tool can fix one memory card corrupted problem!

Problem 2 – Memory card shows invalid file system (RAW)

A corrupted memory card can also lose its file system and cannot be used because it’s not in a file system that Windows recognizes. The simplest solution for this memory card corrupted problem is a format. Here’s how you go about it:

Step 1 – Connect your memory card to PC via adapter/card reader.
Step 2 – Locate the removable storage media in file explorer, right click it and click “Format”.
Step 3 – Set the file system to “FAT”, not FAT32, NTFS, exFAT or anything else as most portable devices are compatible only with the FAT file system. Leave the allocation unit size as it is and uncheck “Quick format”.
Step 4 – Click format, let it finish and your memory card should be good as new!

Of course, formatting a memory card erases all data so make sure that you have a backup or you have recovered the data.

Problem 3 – Memory card cannot be read by PC

Even a problem like this one can be fixed quite easily by simply downloading updated drivers from your PC manufacturer. Always make sure you have the latest drivers and updates and if you’re running an assembled PC, grab the latest motherboard drivers.

There could be another problem as well. Newer cards are SDHC (high capacity) and are not readable on regular SD card readers. Make sure to get a SDHC card reader and updated drivers for it installed in your PC if you want to access the memory card on your PC. It’s the same case with the really high capacity SDXC (Extra capacity) cards.

If none of these are the cases, and even after the obligatory plugging in all ports doesn’t work, then do the following:

Step 1 – Insert the memory card into the card reader/adapter and plug it in to your PC.
Step 2 – Go to Device Manager via Control Panel and look for any devices that show up with a yellow exclamation mark (!).
Step 3 (a) – Right click the faulty device and try to automatically update drivers. If you are unable to, uninstall it, remove your device and restart computer. Alternatively, you could also right click and click “Scan for hardware changes” once it’s uninstalled.
Step 3 (b) – If your device still doesn’t show up, go to the “View” tab and click “Show hidden devices”. Now you might be able to see more faulty or greyed out devices. Right click, uninstall them and restart your computer with the device unplugged.
Step 4 – Once it’s booted up, plug it in again and it should be recognized.

Prepare Your Linux Desktops In Less Time

Linux Desktop implementation on large scale takes a longer time. Facilitating users with there specific needs is even more time-consuming. For eg. in any enterprise when open office is installed along with Linux there are many macros, shorcut keys and formatting styles which are, many times, common for almost all users. We can simply do it by copying user profiles.

We can create those facilities in one users PC and apply them to all other users’.

You can Follow these easy steps to save your time on same :

Create all your macros, shortcut keys and formatting styles in open office on one desktop.

Thereafter open nautilus (file browser) and go to home folder of the user

Note : all the operations performed here-after are to be performed as a root or an administrative user.

Example :

if user xyz have customized open office elements then go to “/home/xyz/”

Note : “.(d0t)” indicates that file is hidden. To see hidden files in nautilus press ctrl + h

or if user root have customized open office then go to /root/

copy .openoffice.org folder

Paste .open office.org folder to different users folder (on a same computer or different computer doesn’t matter)

Example :

if the other user is abc then go to “/home/abc”

rename .openoffice.org to .openoffice.org.old

and paste .openoffice.org folder there (in /home/abc)

so now you will have two folders .openoffice.org and .openoffice.org.old in /home/abc

Important note :

You will have to change ownership of newly pasted folder

We can do it from nautilus (file browser) but it doesn’t affect all the enclosed folders so it will unnecessarily be a lengthy process.

So its better to do it from pseudo terminal

Press alt + F2 - type gnome-terminal - press enter (or click on run button)

type following command in pseudo terminal

chwon -R abc:abc /home/abc/.openoffice.org

do it in same way for other users

You can also follow same procedure for other applications also

Applications like mozilla firefox and evolution also have their profile folders in user’s home folder.

In case of Mozilla firefox we can provide smiliar themes, bookmarks and toolbar buttons to all users

In case of evolution we can provide similar structure of folders and rules to all users.

Linux Command Line Made Easy

Though the Graphical Interface in Linux now-a-days is getting better and better to become more and more mature, more of the flexibility in Linux over other Graphical Operating Systems is still more easily gained using Command-Line. Desktop users are generally annoyed or afraid (may be) of using command line for their purposes. But this article may help them to make Linux Command Line more easier.
Due to more flexibility offered by it, Command-Line, in Linux, is made available in different ways.

In Current generation Linux we have access to command line in various ways. we can either open command line console or open a command line terminal being in Graphical console it self. lets see how
In Linux there are different consoles running at different tty which can be accessed using Ctrl+Alt+F1………………..Ctrl+Alt+F12
On most Linux Distributions including Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Redhat, Suse, etc. Graphical console is by default available on 7^th Console which means if we press Ctrl+Alt+F7 from any console we can get back to Default Graphical Console.

In above example we can see tty3 that is 3rd console which can be invoked by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F3. By default tty1 to tty6 are command-Line consoles. we can log into command line console with any username and password that we use at graphical login screen. We can login with different users on different consoles.
To access command-line from Graphical Console in any Gnome based Linux Distribution like Ubuntu, we can open Gnome Terminal from using menu which is generally available in Applications (Menu) → Accessories → Terminal. Or in any Linux Distribution we can press Alt+F2 to invoke Run Dialog box and type gnome-terminal and press enter to start command-line terminal in Graphical console.
Those Command-Line Terminals are also known as pseudo terminals and we can open more than 1 pseudo terminals at a time. Those terminals are named pts1, pts2 subsequently.

There are several commands that can be used in Linux for different purposes but before that lets see how using command line can be made easy so that any user can use command-line very easily. For many people command-line on Linux becomes very complicated, especially when they need to write long commands and repeat those commands them at some point of time. Below we will see some shortcuts and you might also come across some commands that you are not aware about but you need not worry about that as we will discuss many commands in the due course of time.

Here are some shortcuts available in Linux Command-Line :

- When we are typing any command we can just type starting letters of the command and press tab key to complete those commands. Now if there are more commands starting with same letters then pressing the Tab key twice we can get a list of all commands starting with the character that we have typed
- See example as below : In below example I am trying to invoke firefox (web-browser) and I want to type firefox. But instead I will type fir and press tab key.
- After pressing the Tab key you will see that firefox command is completed automatically.

- In the same way If I press f and then the tab key it will not do any thing but if I press Tab key twice it will display all the commands starting with f. We can short list by typing more and more initial letters of the command.

History command - using previously used commands

This command can be used to display last 1000 commands that we have issued till now.

In the screen below we can see the out-put of history with several commands listed. All of those commands are starting with a number which is command no.

These command nos. can be used to invoke specific command. Eg. if we invoke no. 1245 it will execute command ping google.com.

To invoke any previously used command we can write it starting with ! (exclamation) mark. Eg. !1245 with execute command no. 1245 that is ping google.com.

Ctrl+r – Command-line shortcut

Ctrl+r can be issued from command line this will help us to repeat any command that has been issued in past very easily.
For using it at command line press Ctrl+R
This will change your command prompt as below

Then start typing the letters of any word in the command that was issued previously. The command will be displayed at the command prompt.
Here I am finding a command where I used “del”

The command displayed in above example is “route del default gw 192.168.5.1 which I previously used to delete default gateway.
At this stage if we want to find other command containing same letters just press Ctrl+r again and it will take to commands issued even more previously.
Like in example below you may notice the change in IP address. This command was given even more previously than the command that was first displayed.

Alias – Defining shortcuts for long commands

Alias command can be used for creating shortcuts of long commands.
In example below we can see that a shortcut with name “delgw” is to be created for a long command like “route del default gw 192.168.5.1”. Press enter and continue the creation.

Now when I want to use a command “route del default gw 192.168.5.1” I can use delgw instead.
This way every command that makes command-line complicated can have a defined alias.
Note : Commands created with alias command are only for current session that means if you reboot your OS all those aliases created will be deleted.
There is certainly a way out to make aliases permanent. We can add our commands to a file from where our system will execute all those alias commands whenever the system reboots.
The file that can hold your alias command for permanent use is available at /home/<username>/.bashrc
To edit this file we can issue following command
- gedit /home/<username>/.bashrc
- Note :
  - <username> here stands for current user with which you are logged in.
  - if you want to make permanent aliases for root user replace /home/<username> with /root. i.e. you will have to edit the file at /root/.bashrc
  - gedit is a text editor.
  - Between gedit and /home/<username>/.bashrc there should always be a space.
Example below shows how to edit /home/enjay/.bashrc

here enjay is the user in whose .bashrc I want to make permanent aliases

alias delgw=’route del default gw 192.168.5.1′ is the line added at the end of the file
Finally save the file and permanent alias will be activated at the next boot.

How to Start a SMS Chat in Gmail

You can send a message to any person you wanted to. But make sure they are already present in your Gmail chat list earlier. You can follow these simple steps to use this free SMS chat in Gmail service. So here we go,

Step 1: Login to your Gmail account and look at the Google Talk widget.

Step 2: Select a person you wanted to chat with, and click on Send Text (SMS) option.

Step 3: In this above screenshot, i have selected my friend Vishal Arya as the person whom i want to chat with. So click on Send Text (SMS) service to save his mobile number.

Step 4: Here we are saving 9000000000 as vishal arya phone number. So when ever you send him a message via SMS chat in gmail, it will directly reach his mobile phone as an SMS.

Step 5: Click on Save and now you can send a free SMS to your friend. Here we are sending a direct SMS to Arya phone, via Gmail. I have sent a SMS saying Hello, which will be replied from his mobile number. Since this number is not a valid number, you cannot expect any reply from him.

Google has mentioned few terms of conditions and guide lines for using this free SMS chat in Gmail service. They have also mentioned few tips and techniques to make the best out of this free service. Its very much important to understand these guidelines before proceeding further. Few of them are,

You are restricted to use only 50 credits per day.
Each message you send will burn 1 credit from your daily quota of 50 credits. And each message you receive as a reply will get you 5 credits with maximum up to 50 a day.
You cannot buy additional credits for sending more messages, but surely you can send a message to your own mobile and reply back to get additional credits.
You can use commands like BLOCK, UNBLOCK, START, STOP and other commands to restrict people sending you bulk messages.
If your credits are decreased to zero, they will be charged again to 50 in next 24 hours.
If you are sending too many messages without any reply from other side, you might be blocked due to privacy issues.
Also sending mass messages may ban you for ever. This is to avoid abuses and hatred in chat messages.
You can use STOP command to block all messages from any Gmail user. For this you need to send a message to mobile operator, and enter the System message number to activate the service asap.
You can even chat with your friends who has no Internet connection.
Limited to only few mobile operators as of now.
