Renaming A Computer Over The Network

How many times have you deployed a machine and then had to change the name after going back to your comfy chair? It's happened a couple times to me this week, so I thought I'd post a quick how-to on using the Windows XP Support Tools to rename computers across your domain.

	Open A Dos Box After you've installed the Windows XP Support Tools, open up a command window.
	Run Netdom So, let's say you have a computer named wrongname on domain "mydomain" and want it to be renamed to computer1 with admin account "administrator", then reboot after 60 seconds (with warning to user). You would use the following command in a cmd window: netdom renamecomputer wrongname /newname:computer1 /userD:mydomain\administrator /passwordd:* /usero:administrator /passwordo:* /reboot:60 That's all one line, in case you're wondering.

Conclusion

If you don't want to go to the user's desk and change the name yourself, you can use this command line tool to do the work for you. Keep in mind their machine will reboot in 60 seconds after the command is completed. The support tools have all kinds of groovy apps to help you stay in your chair.

Installing Programs on a Limited Account !

In this step by step guide you will learn about: how to install programs and games in a limited account meaning an account that's not an administrator. This might not always work but it's pretty useful because your able to install programs although your administrator has blocked it.

Step by Step:
1. When your installing the program here is what you have to do.
2. When it gives you the option of choosing the directory or destination where the program will be install, before clicking next click browse to choose a different destination.
3. The destination your going to choose is
C:\Documents and Settings\"your username"\"name of program being installed"\
4. So just browse to
* The C:\ drive(this is the operating system installed drive)
* Then Documents and Settings
* Then your User Name (Limited Account)
5. The reason why you do this is because since your installing it in your account name the computer doesn't stop or check anything because its your account and your name, but if you just select the desktop and choose to install it there it going to say something like "you do not have enough administrative privileges" something like that.

How to Change the Default Location for Installing Applications in Windows Xp

In Windows Xp the default location where the applications are installed is located in C:/Program Files. Sometimes you can run out of space in C: drive and it become impossible to install the programs. But there is a registry tweak which can let you install the applications in different directory of your choice.

Run the Registry editor by typing regedit in the run command box and go to

Just look for the value named ProgramFilesDir. You will see that this value is shown as C:\Program Files by default. Now edit this value and add the location where you want to set the default installation directory. From now onwards XP will use this location as the new default installation directory.

How to enable/disable the compressed (zipped) folder feature in XP?

Today tip will help you to enable/disable the built-in feature of compression or de-compression in windows XP. Windows display the several default frequently used shortcuts in "Send To" menu, for example Compressed (zipped) Folder and others. But if you want to use any third-party application in windows XP for compression or de-compression then you can disable this windows built-in compressed folder feature. Follow the given steps to disable the windows built-in compressed folder feature: To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.
 

Click Start button and then click on Run option to open run dialog box.
Now type the following command in Run box and press Ok button.

A small message will appear with title "RegSvr32" and the message is "DllUnregisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\zipfldr.dll succeeded." Click on Ok button.







Now right click on any file or folder to verify the change.












Follow the given steps to enable the windows built-in compressed folder feature:
Now again click Start button and click on Run option to open run dialog box.
Now type the following command in Run box and press Ok button.

Enable and disable the USB port

                                           

To disable the access to USB port, in windows XP and 2000, follow the steps below
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate, and then click the following registry key:

4. In the right pane, double-click Start.
5. In the Value data box, type 4, click Hexadecimal (if it is not already selected), and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.

To re-enable a disabled port, follow these steps below

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate, and then click the following registry key:

4. In the right pane, double-click Start.
5. In the Value data box, type 3, click Hexadecimal (if it is not already selected), and then click OK.
6. Quit Registry Editor.

Why does Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT disappear while opening?

When you open System Configuration Utility [MSCONFIG], Registry Editor or Task Manager, they flash for a second and quit. This symptom is caused by Viruses. These three are important system utilities which the viruses target.

A quick workaround is to rename the files and run them. Extracting new copies of these files with the same name may not help. Rename these utilities and run them or use MS-MVP Doug Knox's Emergency Msconfig, Regedit, Task Manager utility. This utility creates usable copies of MSCONFIG, REGEDIT AND TASK MANAGER by creating copies of the actual files to C:\EmergencyUtils folder.

Another reason why Regedit can't be launched from Run

As of recent, I've seen reports of the bogus file named regedit.com in Windows systems. This file is actually a Trojan file, which is set the Hidden and System attributes. The regedit.com file may be present in %Systemroot% or %Systemroot%\System32 folders. This file should be deleted.

Normally, users type regedit in Start, Run dialog to launch the Registry Editor. But, if both Regedit.exe (legitimate) and Regedit.com (Trojan) are present in your Windows or System32 folder, the file with the .COM extension takes precedence. As a result, regedit.com process launches. When regedit.com file runs, nothing may happen. Or, the following error may be seen.

ERROR: An Extended Memory Manager is already installed. XMS Driver Not Installed.

To prevent this scenario, you must use the explicit file name and the Path to load the Registry Editor in emergencies. Examples:

• %Systemroot%\Regedit.exe

Here is a trojan Win32.Alcan.C, which copies the file regedit.com (and others) to the Windows folder.

What could be causing my computer to run so slow?

There are many possible causes of a slow PC. Because your computer is constantly working with files - moving, copying and deleting from place to place - it will eventually get cluttered with leftover files, some of which are not needed and just take up valuable disk space.

If your PC crashes or freezes up, it may be a symptom of a slow or cluttered PC. The brain of your computer is the Processor, and it may be that your processor is too slow to run today's demanding software. The processor can also struggle if you have multiple programs running at once - for example, if you have Word open to compose a letter while downloading a file from the Internet and also playing a song through your media player. Following are some steps you could take to increase the speed of your computer.
1. Hard Drive is nearing its capacity:
Try removing programs that are no longer needed to free up some space. Be sure to use the programs uninstall tool (if available). If the program does not have an uninstall tool, then remove the program using Add/Remove Programs in your Control Panel. Also, use the Disk Cleanup tool (start>> all programs>> accessories>> disk cleanup) to free-up additional space.
2. Increase RAM
RAM is the temporary memory the computer uses to do its calculations. If you do not have enough RAM, your programs will run slowly.
3. Your files could be excessively fragmented:
Try using the Disk Defragmenter tool (start>>all programs>> accessories>>systems tools>>disk defragmenter) to restore the fragmented files to their proper location.
4. Too many Icons on your Desktop:
Excessive desktop icons will make your computer run slow. Try removing the icons (right click the icon and select delete) that you rarely use. Removing an icon from your desktop is only removing the "shortcut" to the program, not the program itself.
5. Spyware Installed on Your System
You may also have programs running in the background using up memory that you are unaware of, and in some cases, the problem may be a malicious program such as a virus or spyware.
Many web sites on the Internet install "spyware" on your computer so that it can actually "spy" on you. As you surf the web, more and more spyware gets installed. This will eventually begin to slow your computer very noticeably. Therefore, it is important to perform frequent anti-spyware scans with capable software to remove these unwanted parasites. A couple of programs for this purpose are:
6. Too many programs running at Windows startup:
As you continue to download programs, all of these programs startup and run in the background. To stop these programs from running:
1. Go to Start>> Run. Type in: msconfig [Enter] or click OK.
2. Click the Startup tab.
3. All of the programs listed in this menu that have a checkmark are the programs that are currently running. Deselect (by clicking in the checkbox) the ones that you do not want to run any longer. Once you have done this, click OK.
4. Exit the Microsoft Configuration Utility.
5. You will be asked to restart your computer. Go ahead with the restart. Depending on how many programs that you've stopped from running, you could see very positive results in your computers performance.

Other components of your PC can contribute to poor performance, particularly your Graphics Card when it comes to running media and games software. Some hardware needs special programs called Drivers and these need to be kept up to date.

How To Fix Ntdll.dll Errors

There are many different ways that ntdll.dll errors may be displayed on your computer. Ntdll.dll errors can be caused by a number of different things which result in many different error messages, but some of the most common are listed below:

• "STOP: 0xC0000221 unknown hard error C:\Winnt\System32\Ntdll.dll"
  
• "STOP: C0000221 unknown hard error \SystemRoot\System32\ntdll.dll"
  
• "AppName: [PROGRAM NAME] ModName: ntdll.dll"
  
• "[PROGRAM NAME] caused a fault in module NTDLL.DLL at [ANY ADDRESS]"
  
• "Crash caused in ntdll.dll!"
  
• "NTDLL.DLL Error!"
  
• "Unhandled exception at [ANY ADDRESS] (NTDLL.DLL)"

Ntdll.dll error messages might appear before or after a program is used, while a program is running, when Windows is started or shutdown, or even during a Windows installation.

Cause of Ntdll.dll Errors

The causes of ntdll.dll error messages can vary greatly. However, most ntdll.dll errors result from a corrupt or damaged version of the ntdll.dll file itself, corrupt hardware drivers, or issues between Windows and other programs. Ntdll.dll errors can sometimes mean that a piece of hardware in your computer is malfunctioning, but this is rare.

How To Fix Ntdll.dll Errors

1. Restart your computer. The ntdll.dll error you're receiving could be due to a one-time, temporary issue and a simple reboot may resolve the problem completely.
   
2. Reinstall the program if the ntdll.dll error only displays when you use a specific program.
   
   If the software program has any updates or service packs available, install them too. The software's programmers may have identified an issue with the program that caused the ntdll.dll error and then issued a patch for it.
   
   Note: Third party software programs that have been installed on your computer are almost always the cause of ntdll.dll errors. The remainder of these troubleshooting steps resolve ntdll.dll issues only rarely.
   
3. Check the Windows service pack level you're running and then check Microsoft's support site to see if there is a more recent service pack available for installation. Some issues that caused ntdll.dll errors have been corrected in these service packs from Microsoft.
   
4. Selectively disable Internet Explorer add-ons. If your ntdll.dll error is displaying when you start, run, or close Internet Explorer, an add-on may be causing the problem. Disabling each add-on, one by one, will determine which add-on is the culprit (if any).
   
   Note: As a workaround, assuming the ntdll.dll error really is Internet Explorer related, install and use a competing browser like Firefox.
   
5. Rename the NLSPATH system variable. If your Windows system does not have this environment variable, skip this step.
   
   Note: This is a troubleshooting step for this issue only. Be sure to set this path back to its original name if this does not resolve the ntdll.dll issue.
   
6. Disable Data Execution Prevention for Explorer.exe. As in the previous step, this is for troubleshooting the ntdll.dll issue only. If this doesn't resolve the problem, return the Data Execution Prevention settings to their previous settings.
   
7. Update drivers for any hardware in your computer where updated drivers are available. Outdated drivers sometimes cause ntdll.dll errors.
   
8. Test your memory for damage. If you're receiving ntdll.dll messages, one possible cause could be a bad memory module in your system. Testing your memory will either identify a problem or clear your RAM of any responsibility.
   
   Replace your memory if it fails any of your tests.
   
9. Ntdll.dll errors could occur if you have an Iomega Zip drive on the same IDE cable as the hard drive inside your computer. If so, move the Zip drive to a dedicated IDE controller.
   
10. Replace the IDE cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard. If this cable is damaged or malfunctioning, one symptom could be the ntdll.dll error you're seeing.
    
11. Repair your installation of Windows. If individual software reinstallations fail to resolve the problem, a repair installation of Windows will replace the ntdll.dll file.
    
12. Perform a clean installation of Windows. A clean installation will completely remove Windows from your PC and install it again from scratch. I don't recommend this option unless you've exhausted all previous troubleshooting ideas and you're comfortable that the ntdll.dll error is not caused by a single program (Step #2).
    
    Note: If a single program or plugin is causing the ntdll.dll error, reinstalling Windows and then reinstalling all of the same software may lead you right back to the same ntdll.dll error.
    
13. While extremely rare, if everything else has failed, including the clean installation from the last step, you could be dealing with a hardware issue with your hard drive.
    
    If so, replace the hard drive and then perform a new installation of Windows.

How To Fix Missing Hal.dll Errors in Windows XP

 Hal.dll Error Message

There are few different ways that the "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error may present itself, with the first listing being the most common:

• "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
  <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
  Please re-install a copy of the above file."
  
• "<Winnt_root>\System32\Hal.dll missing or corrupt:
  Please re-install a copy of the above file."
  
• "Cannot find \Windows\System32\hal.dll"
  
• "Cannot find hal.dll"

The "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error displays shortly after the computer is first started. Windows XP has not yet fully loaded when this error message appears.

Cause

Causes of the "missing or corrupt hal.dll" error include, naturally, a damaged hal.dll DLL file or a hal.dll file that has been deleted or moved from its intended location.
Additional causes may include a damaged or missing boot.ini file or possibly a physically damaged hard drive.

Hal.dll Error Troubleshooting

1. Restart the PC. The hal.dll error could be a fluke.
   
2. Check for proper boot order in BIOS. You might see the hal.dll error if the boot order in BIOS is first looking at a hard drive other than your main hard drive.
   
   Note: If you've recently changed your boot order or recently flashed your BIOS, this may be what's causing your problem.
   
3. Run Windows XP System Restore from a command prompt. If this doesn't work or you're receiving the hal.dll error message before you're able to complete this process, move on to the next step.

Hacking Windows XP Without Changing Password

Here is a far better way to get into Windows XP. It is easy and it does not reset the password. Hack into a computer running Windows XP without changing the password and find out all and any passwords on the machine (including admin accounts). You do not need access to any accounts to do this. Of course, do not do this on anyone elses computer without proper authorisation.

Steps to Hack into a Windows XP Computer without changing password:

1. Get physical access to the machine. Remember that it must have a CD or DVD drive.

2. Download DreamPackPL HERE.

3. Unzip the downloaded dpl.zip and you’ll get dpl.ISO.

4. Use any burning program that can burn ISO images.

5. After you have the disk, boot from the CD or DVD drive. You will see Windows 2000 Setup and it will load some files.

6. Press “R” to install DreamPackPL.

7. Press “C” to install DreamPackPL by using the recovery console.

8. Select the Windows installation that is currently on the computer (Normally is “1″ if you only have one Windows installed)

9. Backup your original sfcfiles.dll by typing:
“ren C:\Windows\System32\sfcfiles.dll sfcfiles.lld” (without quotes)

10. Copy the hacked file from CD to system32 folder. Type:
“copy D:\i386\pinball.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\sfcfiles.dll” (without quotes and assuming your CD drive is D:)

11. Type “exit”, take out disk and reboot.

12. In the password field, type “dreamon” (without quotes) and DreamPack menu will appear.

13. Click the top graphic on the DreamPack menu and you will get a menu popup. 

 

14. Go to commands and enable the options and enable the god command.

15. Type “god” in the password field to get in Windows.

You can also go to Passwords and select “Logon with wrong password and hash”. This option allows you to login with ANY password.

We use several softwares on our PC. Few of them are in the trail version, some are in the beta version while few are in their full released version. From time to time, their companies release their updated versions. These updates comes with few bugs fixed, improved and with more functionality. So, it’s necessery to get the updated version of the softwares. But how cool is it to check if they are having new updates or not by themselves?

Update checker is a freeware from the house of Filehippo.com. This Update Checker tool comes in handy as it’s very small in size. It’s just 153 KB. Download and install it. Once installed it will find if your installed softwares are having any newer updates or not.

The result will be displayed in a different page. On the right hand side of the results, you will get a link to download the updated versions of your softwares. It’s a recommended tool if you are having many softwares installed and find it very difficult to search for their updates manually.

Backup and Restore Windows Drivers Using DriverMax

Driver problems are like never ending issues in the Windows PC. You’ll have a working driver on your machine, but don’t have the installation cd anymore to install after format your computer.The simplest way to handle this is a tool known as DriverMax.

Today’s post is some what interesting where we will know how to speed up windows xp in different scenarios. First we have to make sure that what ever we are installing in windows will show same effect on the performance of the system. So make sure that you wont install too much of stuff in your computer.

The best part is the we are not any software’s or applications to speed up our system. All you have to do is to edit the registry file which is very easy. Just follow the simple steps given below.

Speed Up Booting Process in XP.

1. Open Run (Win + R)
2. Type regedit
3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and then to SYSTEM and to CurrentControl­Set and to Control and
4. Click on ContentIndex, You can see a list of files in right hand window.
5. Go there and search for Startupdelay and double click on it to edit it.
6. Change the Base Valuse from Hexadecimal to Decimal
7. Now change the value from 480000 to 4000.

9. Here the exact location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControl­Set\Control\ContentIndex\Startupdelay

4. And save it as ram.vbe or any other name which you want.

3. And then Advanced, look for first option performance and then click on setting.
4. Click on custom and De-select all the option expect the last two.
5. Click on Apply and then check out the windows performance which is a lot more better now.

Change Windows Xp SP2 to Sp3 and Sp2 to Sp1 easily.

1. This can be done very easily with simple steps.
2. Open run and type regedit.
3. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and System and to CurrentControlSet and to Control
4. Find windows folder in control and then click on it to see CSD Version which is on the right side.
5. Double click to open it and then Change the data value from 200 XP SP2 to 300 for XP SP3
6. and Change 200 XP SP2 t0 100 for XP SP1.
7. By this way you can change Windows Xp Service packs 1,2,3 to whatever you want.

Easily create bootable USB drives from ISO images
Rufus is a simple utility which makes it easy to build bootable USB drives from ISO images.
Of course if you have an ISO image then you could simply burn this to a CD or DVD. This won't help you much if your target system doesn't have an optical drive, though. USB keys are also easier to carry around, less likely to be damaged, and faster, which may be important if you need to use the disc often.

Rufus doesn't require any installation, and is generally very straightforward to set up. It'll automatically detect your USB drive, for instance, so you may not have to select that. Getting started could be as simple as browsing to your ISO image and clicking the "Start" button: the program will then walk you through everything else it needs to know.

If you need more control, though, you're able to configure how the USB drive will be formatted (file system, cluster size and so on). And the program even includes some advanced format options which may help your drive be recognised on older PCs, although normally these shouldn't be necessary.

And if this is a task you need to carry out often, then you'll be pleased to hear that Rufus is reasonably speedy. We created a bootable USB version of the Windows 8 Release Preview image, for instance, and found the program was around 30% faster than another popular boot drive creator, UNetbootin.
