How to select text Vertically in Word 2007?

Almost everybody who writes their documents in Microsoft Word knows how to select the text horizontally. You have to select the text horizontally in order to delete, underline, italicize etc.  But many times you face a situation in which you have to select the text vertically. For example you might have to delete the first few words in every line in a list in order to delete it. You need to do that as you reformat a Word document. Many people think that it is not possible to select text vertically in Word 2007 document. It is very easy to select text vertically in Word 2007. You just need to do this trick in order to make the vertical selection:
Point the mouse to the beginning of the text you want to select.
Hold down the Alt key.
Drag the mouse pointer downwards around the required area while still holding down the Alt key.
The text will be selected vertically.
After you select text vertically in Word 2007, you can make it bold, underline, italicize, delete, cut or copy it. You can also paste it anywhere else in the document if you want.
This feature which allows you to select text vertically in Word 2007 is very useful while working with lists. I have deleted the first word from every item on the list by holding down the Alt key and selecting vertically. However, a vertical selection can be useful in any other sort of document as well.

Usually a Microsoft Office file (pptx, ppt, docx, doc, xlsx, xls, odt, ods, and odp) can be corrupted when your computer or the MS Office app itself crashes while you’re trying to save it. This often happens when there is a power failure. Microsoft Office, by default, will save a temp file periodically while you’re working on an office file. You can easily recover these temp files from the temp folders in Windows. This method eliminate the need of any third party software to recover your corrupted office files. Follow the steps below to recover the temp files.
For Windows XP (or older) users:
  1. Go to Start -> Search for files and folders
  2. Select your computer or your hard drives in the Look In drop-down menu.
  3. Enter the following for file name to be searched: *.TMP
  4. This will search all files with extension .tmp. The office files are usually with the names same as their types of documents, for example: docx22.tmp. You can easily find your files by sorting the “date modified”.
  5. Run Ms Office and try to open the temp files you’ve just recovered.
For Windows 7 or Windows Vista users:
  1. Go to Start -> Simply search for anything and then click on See More Results. (Or simply open My Computer)
  2. In the box at the upper right corner of the window appeared, enter the following for file name to be searched:

  4. Run Ms Office and try to open the temp files you’ve just recovered.

Removing the page number from First page in Microsot Office

Sometimes, when you create a document with numbered pages, you don't want the first page to have a page number. For example, a title page or a cover page usually has no page number.
Note :- If your document already has page numbers, the page number on the cover page is automatically suppressed when you insert a cover page from the gallery of cover pages in Microsoft Office Word 2007. Inserting a cover page causes the second page to be numbered as page 2.

  1. Click anywhere in the document.
  2. On the Page Layout tab, click the Page Setup Dialog Box Launcher, and then click the Layout tab.
  1. Under Headers and footers, select the Different first page check box, and then click OK
Notes
  • If the Different first page check box is already selected, do not clear it. Instead, delete the page number in the First Page Header or First Page Footer area.
  • If you want the first page to have a header or footer that does not include a page number, insert the header or footer that you want while the cursor is in the First Page Header or First Page Footer area.

Start numbering on the second page with 1

  1. Follow the steps for removing the page number from the first page.
  2. On the Insert tab, in the Headers & Footers group, click Page Number, and then click Format Page Numbers.
  1. In the Start at box, type 0.
  2. and then finally click the page page after cover page and choose page format (above the page or below the page) then page number will start from after cover page as 1.

Recover Forgotten Ms-Word Passwords !

The software has extensive password recovery options for different Office applications, but I used my Home version just for mangling with Microsoft Word.

When you open the application, you can chose different types of attacks. In majority of cases dictionary attack will be just enough. A large base of Word users uses normal phrases for this kind of passwords. Open a Word file and the password recovery process will start:

The software is very fast and as you can see from the lower right bottom of the screenshot below, it tested approx. 17,000 passwords per second. In its peaks the number was up to seven times bigger.

Two minutes after starting the scan I got a positive response from the software and it showed that I was one of "those" people that use their dog's name as a password. Shame on me - the only thing I can say to my defense is that this Word file did not hold any important information.

While playing with the software I tested it against some different types of passwords such as random gibberish and birth dates. Of course, the dictionary was not enough for recovering these passwords, but the brute force attack came to the rescue and delivered results.

How to Open Docx Files Without Microsoft Word 2007 ?

Docx format was introduced by Microsoft in 2007 with a quest for people to upgrade their office software and other Microsoft services. This version of MS Office 2007 is not compatible with the older versions like Office 2003 or Office 2000. I get annoyed when I receive the .docx files from my friends and I don’t have Office 2007 installed on my machine and I don’t have any plans to upgrade it either.

open docx files

So I will tell you five known ways to open a .docx file even if you don’t have microsoft office 2007 installed on your computer.

1. Microsoft Compatibility Pack
This pack is introduced by Microsoft so that its new products are backward compatible with the older software. This pack will allow you to open, edit and save all your office documents in the latest versions of the Microsoft. This pack is available from the website of the company.

2. OpenOffice
This is an open source alternative to the Microsoft Office. This software is free and easy to use. You can open them directly or using its Open XML Translator tool.

3. Go Online
Internet is flooded with many websites that offer you free services to convert the .docx format into .doc format online. There are several popular online converters available such as Zamzar and docx2doc. You can opt for the offline conversion also by downloading the Docx-convertor dashboard from here.

4. Google Docs
And here comes the Google to rescue us from this situation. The Google docs enable you to view your .docx file online but keep in mind that the formatting can be affected.

5. Using Firefox Extension
OpenXML Viewer Firefox Plugin is developed for Microsoft Office 2007 or higher version that enables you to view the .docx files in the browser itself. This plugin works by converting the .docx into HTML on the fly retaining all the formatting and other layouts. You can download this plugin from here.
